“If approved by the county, GL Homes’ new community would be a continuation of the suburban-style development proposed on farmland in an area where most other homes are built on at least 1.25 acres or more. In Loxahatchee and the Acreage, unpaved roads, backyard farms and pastures are still the norm.” – Sun Sentinel June 19, Friday, 2015

If approved by the county are the operative words here. A handful of politicians and influential government appointees are pushing Palm Beach County headlong into ‘Browardization’.

Email or call the County Commissioners to let them know you are watching their votes and urge them to slow the rush to packed density until the long-term consequences can be responsibly weighed by independent studies.

GL Homes Planning 4,000 More Homes in Loxahatchee

By Andy Reid: SunSentinel June 19, 2015

“The newly approved Minto West mega development could be getting a big neighbor in rural Loxahatchee.

GL Homes proposes building about 4,000 homes on farmland next to the old citrus groves that Minto West already plans to turn into 4,500 homes west of Royal Palm Beach.

GL Homes has long owned the nearly 5,000-acre Indian Trails Grove property, where the company nearly a decade ago envisioned building as many as 12,000 homes — before the South Florida development boom fizzled.

Now, with development picking up again, GL Homes is proposing to build at a per-acre rate similar to what the County Commission in October approved for Minto West.

“This is obviously the last big piece of the [development] puzzle,” GL Homes Vice President Larry Portnoy said about building planned in the Loxahatchee area. “We have waited 10 years to bring this in. … It was about time.”

GL Homes representatives this week notified the county that they plan to push for changes to development and zoning restrictions in order to allow about 4,000 homes along with new businesses. Portnoy said the company next month plans to submit more details about the proposed development.

GL Homes envisions building mostly single-family homes along with commercial development aimed at serving new neighborhoods, Portnoy said.

The Minto West building plans commissioners approved in the fall could set the precedent for what gets built at Indian Trails Grove.

Minto West calls for about 4,500 homes and 2 million square feet of shopping centers, offices and other business space on nearly 4,000 acres north of Okeechobee Boulevard and split by Seminole Pratt Whitney Road.

GL Homes’ property is just north and west of Minto West.

If approved by the county, GL Homes’ new community would be a continuation of the suburban-style development proposed on farmland in an area where most other homes are built on at least 1.25 acres or more. In Loxahatchee and the Acreage, unpaved roads, backyard farms and pastures are still the norm.”
