A proposed iPic Entertainment eight-screen theater in Downtown Delray Beach did not get the blessing of the city’s planning and zoning board Monday evening July 21.

In refusing to recommend the iPic on the site of the city’s old library, at Fourth and Fifth Streets, the board panned three provisions iPic needs:

  • Abandon an alley
  • Allow the building to go over 48 feet
  • Use of the site for a theater

But will the Delray Beach City Commission listen to its planning board and all the resident voices who don’t want to live with the worsening of traffic that is already congested?

Or, will the city commision listen to the developer and the city’s planning staff, both of which agree that the iPix should go forward?  The city commission gets the final decision, and could vote as early as August.

Background:

In 2013, Delray Beach’s Community Redevelopment Agency unanimously selected iPic as the winner for the city’s old library site. The old 1.57-acre site sits south of the city’s main, bustling street in the heart of downtown.

The Delray iPic complex would  hold eight auditoriums, 529 seats, about 42,869 square feet of Class A office space, 7,000 square feet of retail space and a parking garage. Upon completion, the theater would employ about 408. iPic also plans to move its headquarters to the site from its current iPic offices in Boca Raton.
